This picture is from a few years ago but reminded me of a great activity that I'd done with my students.
While learning about dinosaurs, we made our own "fossils" by pressing plastic insects and shells into clay. This was great sensory stimulation for the kiddos. They had to press hard to make an imprint and then they could feel the bumps and ridges left by shells and bugs. We extended this activity by burying the "fossils" in sand and letting the students dig for them like real archaeologists.
Great books to go along with this activity:
Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones, by Byron Barton
Fossils, by Aliki
Prehistoric Actual Size, by Steve Jenkins
