Field Trip to Eastern Market

Being in DC, on Capitol Hill, we are fortunate to near lots of opportunities for free educational field trips.

This picture is from a field trip last fall to Eastern Market (this year's trip got canceled due to weather, but we will try again in Spring). In preparation for the trip, we read a lot of books about markets and food, including, To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda. We also planned out what produce we would need to get by writing out the recipe from the big book, Neighborhood Soup, by JoAnne Nelson. The kiddos were so excited by the time we finally went shopping! Each chaperone received a picture of an item for the kiddos to look for and the money to pay for the item. Each group was responsible for finding their item around the market. When we returned to school, we chopped everything up, tossed it in a crock pot, and waiting while the veggies simmered and the classroom began to smell delicious. We ate our soup all together during our Thanksgiving Family Feast.
